The Great 1998 Gold Wing and Steam Train Trip!

Direct Routing to Pages with:
Utah Desert and Escalante ~ Glen Canyon Dam and D&SNGRR ~ Silverton and Passes ~ Skyline Drive
Royal Gorge ~ Gunnison Museum Display ~ Lake City ~ Slumgullion Summit and Creede ~ Cumbres & Toltec RR
Meteor Crater ~ Grand Canyon RR ~ Hoover Dam ~ Heber Creeper

We actually got the best mileage of the trip going over these two passes.  I made 54 mpg!  I think it is because we just took our time and idled up the hill.

It is still a long ways up, even if we could coast down the other side.

Approaching Creede, CO, at 8,852 feet.  The town is at the entrance to a rocky canyon that you can just see in the photo.

This seems to be the city yard.

Across the street is the firehouse...in a cave!

Yup.  Really!

From here we coasted down the old railroad grade (still tracks to Creede; I guess the government won't let them abandon them, but there are trees growing between the rails...) to South Fork, over Wolf Creek Pass to downtown Pagosa Springs!  Then it was on to Chama, NM.
