Bright and early the next morning, off to Texaco for gas, and then a final check before we travel on. |
Along the way, we got to see one last
express train to Silverton! Keep your eyes on it, she's a' comin'! (Large GIF, sorry...) |
Coal Bank Pass is the first of two passes
on US 550, the Million Dollar Highway, between Durango and Silverton. The only constant to riding the mountains of Colorado is up and down, up and down! |
A brief stop over looking Silverton.
We had a nice breakfast there in an old saloon, still in use.
Breakfast in the morning, Saloon in the evening. |
You
can see the track as it
runs a backwards "S" into Silverton. It follows the yellow
highlighting in the detail to the right. |
Yet another pass, with a rest area. I
think this one is Red Mountain Pass, past Silverton on US 550.
There are Mountains everywhere, and most of them seem to be covered
with mine tailings! Gold miners crawled to the tops of these
mountains and mined them. I am not sure how to get to the top of
some of them, let alone live and work in the little air left at that
altitude... |
